Do I Need a Coach?

RANDom thought: Put Me in Coach

Why do I need a coach? Have you asked yourself that question? Maybe you have thought about it as you continue to hear about this relatively new career or life tactic for improvement. Still, you are not sure if this applies to you.

Let’s begin with defining the word. Coach: a large closed four-wheeled horse-drawn carriage…. Oops, wrong definition!
Try this: Coach: private tutor or one who instructs or trains.
That is the definition we are working with for today’s blog.

Often, when one thinks about a coach, they think of athletics. While that is what we most often hear of when we hear the word coach, that is not the only type of coach that one may hire. There are executive, life, relationship, and sex coaches. So, how do you know if you need a coach? Ask yourself these questions: Where am I today? Where do I want to be in the future? What is the gap that I need to fill to get there? This is why you hire a coach.

For example, what are the gaps if you are in a mid-level management position and want to get to an executive position? Do you need a new skill set, do you need to change organizations, or maybe you simply do not know what the gaps are and how to fill them.
This is where an executive coach can be of assistance. A coach is not your boss, peer, or friend. They are someone you pay to give you options. Notice that I did not say to provide you with advice. A good coach doesn’t give you their opinion or advice. That is what friends and family are for! Instead, a good coach asks you many questions so you may find what is missing between where you are and where you want to be. One more example. If you are at a point in life where you ask yourself, “is this all there is” or “what is next for me in my next stage of life,” a life coach may be helpful. A life coach will work with you to identify the goals you want to achieve and help you figure out how to get there.

If you have decided that you might want to hire a coach, where do you find one, and more importantly, how do I know they are right for me?
